5 star rating: Highly Recommended Our tour guide was Katrina, a lovely young lady from Germany, who spoke great English. We were the only two signed up for the Sunday tour, so it turned out to be a private tour. It's about one hour drive from Barcelona to Montserrat. She gave us a nice overview of the history & the culture on our way there. The church was beautiful, lot's of people wanted to listen to the boys sing. We left the mountain around 1:30m. In the afternoon we visited an unfinished church designed by Gaudí, interesting. the last stop was the Güell Garden. We didn't spend enough time at the garden since we had to leave at 4pm to catch a plane. Over all a very fun day. Reviewed by: John L, United States of America, April 2010

Montserrat, Gaudí & Modernism Small Group Day Trip
Tour Summary -
A rare chance to see two of Catalunya’s most iconic attractions in a single day. In the morning we will explore the beauty of Montserrat before discovering the Gaudí crypt, one of his most inspired but least visited creations, in the afternoon and finishing the day at Park Güell.
Full Tour Description -
We depart from Barcelona at 9:00am outside the Hard Rock Cafe from where all of our Day Tours from Barcelona depart. and head straight to Montserrat, just over an hour away.
Nothing quite prepares the visitor for the iconic beauty of this special mountain. The fantastic shapes of the rock and the untouched landscape make it a place that you'll never forget.
Keeping to our philosophy of giving you plenty of free time to explore on your own, but guiding you in the right direction, the first thing we do on arrival is explain the various options.
This day starts much the same way as our Montserrat & Cava Day Tour No tour here would be complete without a visit to the sanctuary where the Moreneta (Black Virgin) is housed is a must do. The sanctuary has been in use for almost 1000 years welcoming pilgrims and the curious who have made the long climb up this spectacular mountain.
Another highlight of the day is listening to one of Europe’s oldest children’s choirs, La Escolania de Montserrat.
If you are looking for something less cultural, the trails and pathways of the mountain all offer something different. No matter your fitness levels of abilities, all the walks look out on stunning views over the surrounding landscape.
If you really prefer something that requires no effort whatsoever, but don't want to leave without seeing the very best of Montserrat, you can take one of the two rack railways to the very top of down to the Holy Grotto. And if even that is too much, then you can just sit back in one of the many cafes and enjoy the panorama with a cup of traditional coffee with milk.
After lunch, at around 2:00pm, we leave Montserrat and head to the Colònia Güell, about one hour away.
The Colònia Güell was a utopian dream of Eusebi Güell, a prosperous local businessman, and one of Gaudí’s most ardent admirers.
Started in 1890, it was built in the current Modernista style by various architects. But the most famous of them all was none other than Antoni Gaudí, who was in charge of building the church.
Today, it is possible to wander around the Colònia Güell and imagine what it must have been like to have been one of those workers. The village is still in tact, and, in fact, it is very much alive and well. The old workers' houses are still there and still being live din, the social club is still serving coffee and drinks, and is where you'll probably end up having lunch.
But the highlight of this visit is the crypt built by Gaudí. It is the most outstanding building of the Colony and perhaps of all Gaudí's works.
Despite being well off the tourist route, it is one of Gaudí’s most frequently studied works on account of the structural innovations, the superb use of material, and the spaciousness of the inside and the porch.
To step inside the Crypt at the Colònia Güell is to enter the fantasy world of Gaudí far away from the crowds and souvenir shops. For some, it is the most intimate and authentic Gaudí experience they have.
The tour leaves Colònia Güell at around 4:30pm and heads for Park Güell.
Here, you will feel as if you’re entering a green island reigning over the city. Follow the windy alleys, passing over bridges or under twisting rock pillars. Admire the fascinating ceramic benches and the fantastic view over Barcelona. Discover the elephant houses imagined by the genius, and the mysterious market place and its imposing columns. Simply get lost in this fascinating labyrinth made up of rocks and pine trees.
The tour officially ends here. However, for those wanting to stay with the bus back to Plaça Catalunya, you will have 20 minutes to dip your toe into the park.
